  • The Traditional Doula School is an online homebirth-based doula training program designed to help you become a certified homebirth and postpartum doula through a holistic, natural, and evidence-informed lens.


  • This course is open to anyone called to serve women! Whether you’re a mother, aspiring birth worker, birthkeeper, nurse, midwife student, or someone simply drawn to holistic maternal care. This is for you!

  • No experience is required! Everything you need to know to begin your journey as a doula is included in the 20-module program.

  • After finishing the education, you can decide where you want to take it. Whether it be birthkeeping ( attending births with no midwife ) homebirth doula ( under midwifery care ) or just a postpartum doula ( helping in the immediate up to a couple weeks postpartum) Or you can be it all!

  • You have 12 months to complete the course. But it will range from 60-80 hours given book reading time. It will be different for everyone.

  • Enrollment is always open, so you can begin the moment you’re ready.

  • Yes, every single thing is online.

  • You’ll receive 20 full modules with written content, printable PDFs, and audio lessons you can listen to on the go

  • There’s no timed homework, you’ll move through the course freely, completing it in your own rhythm. There are quizzes and two book reviews that can be completed at any time during your schooling.

  • You’ll receive virtual guidance from Ruby, weekly group Q+As, and ongoing support even after certification.

  • Upon completion and passing the final 100-question multiple choice exam, you’ll be professionally certified as a Homebirth and Postpartum Doula through The Traditional Doula School.

  • Yes! Our school is a professionally recognized and respected training program that teaches within the homebirth model of care. While doulas are not regulated by a national board, our certification is accepted in homebirth, birth centers, and hospital settings worldwide.

  • There’s no national or international agency that decides this. Each doula organization: DONA, CAPPA, or Birth Arts, creates its own internal approval process. Independent schools like ours follow or exceed those same educational standards while maintaining the freedom to teach traditional and holistic wisdom that’s often left out of mainstream programs.


  • Many large programs are built around the hospital model of birth. The Traditional Doula School honors the physiological and ancestral model of homebirth, focusing on natural care, informed choice, and woman-centered support. You’ll learn the same foundational skills—but with a more holistic, heart-led approach.

  • No. Your certification from The Traditional Doula School is lifetime valid. You’ll also receive free continuing education modules to keep learning as your practice evolves.

  • Yes, you will need to read 5 books total in your schooling outside of the 20 modules. If you have already read one of the books on the required reading list, you need to look at the additional list provided.

  • It’s not required, but I highly suggest it! If you want to just start with the education to feel comfortable, go for it. If you want to start seeing what birthwork life is like? Jump in!
